Gitega, May 19, 2016 (AM): Burundi, like other countries around the world celebrated the International Day of the fight against obstetric fistula in center named “Urumuri”, located beside the Gitega hospital . This day has the theme: “Together to give life, smile and hope to women blowing obstetric fistula in Burundi”. Besides the two members of the Government, respectively the Minister of Public Health and the fight against AIDS, the Minister of Education, University Teachings and Scientific Research as well as some members of the parliament and senate, directional plan was for the First Lady of the Republic of Burundi.
The sequence of activities has been started by the visit of HE Pastor Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza to 60 women living with obstetric fistula who are about to be treated by experts in the above mentioned center. These have simultaneously received an assistance consisted of 3 cloths and sanitary materials from the First Lady.
Residential Representative of UNFPA, Suzanne MANDONG said that vulnerable to this disease are girls and women from the poorest families.
The Minister of Health and the Fight against AIDS praised the constant support of the First Lady of the Republic of Burundi in the areas of children’s education and maternal and child health through the Buntu Foundation of which She chairs as Founder and President. She also invited the sick women from all over the country to join the specialists at the center “Urumuri” of Gitega where there is a treatment campaign that began as of May 16, 2016 until June 10, 2016.
Her Excellency Pastor Denise Nkurunziza thanked the government for creating this Urumuri center and has provided several recommendations to women and girls. “Abstain girls of these early marriages because it is the leading cause of obstetric fistula”, said the First Lady.
She finally thanked the international organizations that support the government’s efforts in the health sector and has in particular welcomed the UNFPA which did everything for this commemoration to take place.
